Photo Prop - Butterfly wings, Diaper Cover, & Hat

Mother and I received invitations to a baby shower for a cousin, She will be welcoming a baby girl soon. I have 2 boys and more pink yarn then I ever remember buying so I immediately went into craft overdrive. I made for another family member a set of mermaid tails, bikini tops and headbands for twins, Photo props have become popular and these were just too cute. I wanted something different and girly and couldn't find anything I really liked. I got kind of stuck on the butterfly ideal and there weren't many examples of what I had in mind. So like any good crafter I set out to design it myself. The original ideal would have had the wings attached to a 'cocoon'  with the hat. The baby will be born during summer though so I thought just a drape would work. Perhaps later to be used as a wall hanging or something. The light pink portions were made, edged and sewn together. So if you don't like whip stitching yarn pieces together this isn't for you. Once those pieces are sewn together they are edged again in the hot pink and dark purple. The 2 wings are then sewn to the pink 'body'. [Or sewn to a cocoon] The center pink matches the hat and diaper cover. I've made a dress that is a matching color.  So the diaper cover and hat do double duty, once you removes the 'antenna' that are only tied through the open stitches of the hat. {Shown in next blog entry} Once I sort through the scratch pad of notes I have I'll add on the pattern for the wings.

I did take a few photos of the foundation dc I added to give the round piece length.

This is the center for the Med or Middle section. It's a magic circle with 6sc, sl st to join each round. Round 2 is 2sc in each st around. For the larger section there is a 3rd round of *1sc in first st, 2 sc in next* repeated around.

For the Med piece the next round is pink (2sc in each st around) Below shows the sl st to complete the round.

To give the piece length we are going to add some foundation dc. Like a stick to a lolliepop. After the sl st you draw a loop up from the next st.

And again from the nest st. So you have 3 loops on your hook.

Yarn over and pull through 1 loop.

Yarn over and pull though 2 loops

Yarn over and pull though the last 2 loops on the hook. Now complete the rest of your foundation dc stitches as normal (your 1st fdc st is now joined at top, middle and bottom of st). 8 for the Med. and 12 for the Large piece.

When the required number of foundation stitches are complete, place 3 sc in the end of the last fdc. 11 sc up the 'bottom' of fdc, 1 dc in the last fdc, 1 dc in the first st on the round, 1 hdc on the next st, sc around to last 2 st on round, 1 hdc, 1 dc, 1 dc on first fdc, 11 sc down 'top' of fdc, 1 sc in next, ch 2, sc in each st around piece, 3sc in ch2 space, 4 sc, skip a st, sl st in next and fasten off. Large piece have additional pink round of sc st Except for pointed end sc, ch1, sc in middle of previous 3 sc. finish off the same.(4sc, skip st, sl st,in next , fasten off)

The small pink piece is 2 rounds of circle (small yellow but in pink) 6 fdc st. and the first round with dc and hdc in same place.

Each piece is edged in pale purple. Sm: sc around, sc in point end, 2sc in next 3 st centered on round end. Med: sc around, 3sc in pointed end, Lg: dc around, 3 dc in pointed end, *2dc in next st, 1 dc in next* repeated 3x centered on rounded end

The 3 pieces are then sewn together. Whip stitched with pale purple yarn. Edged in hot pink. Dec between last stitches before sewn together. There were 3 points on top pc, one centered on middle and one on lower part of small where I put multiple  dc in the st on both rounds of hot pink to pop that area out a bit the flourish in dark purple sits over those points. DkP sc, pct, 2 sc, 2 pct, 2 sc, pct, sc

The center piece is 4 rounds around foundation with one end pointed and one round. Whipped stitched together showing stitches a bit because I thought it added a bit of texture. I would make that center piece black if I ever made it again. Or you could attach it to a cocoon. I'd love to see pics of one done that way,

This diaper cover is an awesome pattern
called Princess Diaper Cover by Elizabeth Allen. This is a free pattern on Ravelry. The pattern has sizes 0-12 months and has many pictures of the completed project.

The Hat is an increased cluster st. The curly q's are made by ch 30 and then 3sc in each chain you may have to help the twist a bit after you done. I added multi color pompoms to the end and used the beginning yarn to tie the antenna to the hat so they could be removed later if desired.

I should get one of those lifelike baby dolls to model my stuff! I hope she likes it.
